Nipissing University will play host to educational recruiters from around the world as the university hosts the annual Education Fair on Friday, January 29, from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. in the Education Centre Gymnasium (room A110).

The Education Fair is an opportunity for recruiters and school boards to engage the best and brightest new teachers from Nipissing’s highly respected faculty of education. This year’s fair has 41 separate groups looking to attract Nipissing grads. Of the 41 groups, 14 represent international organizations recruiting for Asia, Australia, Bahrain, China, Korea, Mexico, Turkey, and the United Kingdom; 23 represent school boards and organizations from across Ontario; one is from Edmonton and three are from Quebec.

“Each year we’ve seen an increase in the number of international recruiters coming to the Education Fair and more and more of our students are expressing interest in teaching abroad,” said Lianne Gagne, student employment officer at Nipissing and fair organizer. “I think our grads are especially well-suited to international teaching, given the success of Nipissing’s international teaching practicum program. Nipissing graduates excellent teachers who understand the complexities of teaching in another country as well as at home.”

Nipissing’s faculty of education has been offering the chance for students to complete a portion of their practice teaching in an international setting since 2003. In previous years, students have had the opportunity to study and teach in Cameroon, Kenya, China, Jamaica, Egypt, Italy and the United Kingdom. This year, Nipissing students will be travelling to Kenya, Ecuador and Italy.

Currently, there are approximately 750 students enrolled in Nipissing’s education degree programs (both consecutive and concurrent). The Education Fair gives them the opportunity to meet potential employers to discuss hiring practices and requirements. In-depth, 30-minute information sessions by school boards and organizations will also be conducted throughout the afternoon.
