This Friday April 23, Nipissing University will welcome young biologists to campus and give them a hands-on opportunity to learn about a day-in-the-life of a biology or chemistry student during Biology Day.

Aimed at local grade 11 students, Biology Day helps to inform students and their teachers about what Nipissing’s Biology and Chemistry programs have to offer. Currently, there are approximately 190 students signed up for the event.

“Recently we’ve enjoyed some considerable growth at Nipissing, particularly in the department of Biology and Chemistry. Since local high school students and their teachers may be unaware of the small class-size learning environment and some of the unique opportunities and high-calibre course offerings that benefit our students, we wanted to invite them to campus to learn and have some fun,” said Joseph Boivin, an instructor in the Biology department and one of the event organizers.

Throughout the day, students will rotate through a series of 40-minute interactive sessions, lead by the department’s laboratory instructors and technologists. Each session provides insight into the laboratory portion of a university-level course and will cover topics that include anatomy, chemistry, ecology, and microbiology. Students will tour some of the brand new research facilities where they could eventually work on completing their fourth year thesis projects at Nipissing. As well, current Nipissing Biology students will provide their perspective on why Nipissing’s Biology program was the right choice for them.

Events run from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
