Nipissing University's Women's Centre will be hosting a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, December 6 to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, as well as the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. The vigil will take place in the Nipissing University foyer at 11:30 a.m.

On December 6, 1989, 14 women were killed by a gunman at l'École Polytechnique in Montreal. This event has come to be known as the Montreal Massacre.

"As a university with a high female population this day of commemoration is especially important for Nipissing, not only in honouring the lives of women lost to violence, but also in raising awareness about violence against women within our community," said Jessica St. Peter, a third-year Gender Equality and Social Justice student at Nipissing University and President of the Nipissing University Women's Centre.

The vigil will also include speeches and discussion. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
