Nipissing University celebrates silver anniversary with flag raising ceremony

'We take very seriously our responsibility for the next 25 years to make sure we give back as much as possible and contribute to this community' Dr. Michael DeGagne University President

Representatives of Nipissing University and the City of North Bay stood in blowing snow for a flag raising ceremony at city hall Friday, wrapping up a year of 25th birthday celebrations.

Nipissing received its charter as an independent degree-granting institution on December 10th, 1992.

"We were very aware 25 years ago when we first got our charter, that the citizens of North Bay and the community came out and rallied for Nipissing to be here as an independent institution. So now we take very seriously our responsibility for the next 25 years to make sure we give back as much as possible, and contribute to this community," said Dr. Michael DeGagne, President of Nipissing University.

Mayor Al McDonald pointed to the strong partnership they share, noting that many alumni continue to contribute to the city long after graduation.

McDonald said he learned long ago the importance of supporting post-secondary institutions.

"The vibrancy, the economic impact, the value that Nipissing University brings to our community is immeasurable. This is an opportunity for us to show our support for our university, that does incredible work right here in our city," said McDonald.

The president of the Nipissing University Student Union, Sydney Lamorea, says having the opportunity to participate in the anniversary celebrations has been inspirational.

"It means 25 years of Nipissing University alumni, faculty and staff working together to make Nipissing, North Bay and the world, a better place, one student at a time," said Lamorea. " I love North Bay. I'm from North Bay. I've grown up seeing Nipissing change the world around me, so it's been amazing to be a part of this 25th anniversary. I hope in 25 years I'm invited back to the time capsule opening."
