Nipissing University in conjunction with Routes and Rhythms is hosting a series of presentations and workshops on October 2 and 3, featuring Javanese gamelan music and dance.

Javanese gamelan is one of the world's richest musical traditions. The music employs many percussion, wind and string instruments, collectively called gamelan, which has been continuously developed at the various courts and villages of Central Java over many hundreds of years. The instruments are encased in ornate and intricate wood carvings resulting in a feast for the eyes as well as the ears.

Performers include Nur Intan Murtadza, an accomplished musician in the gamelan tradition of Central Java, who has studied at the Conservatory for Traditional Arts in Surakarta, Indonesia; and Wiryawan Padmonojati, a noted dancer and musician from Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

On Tuesday, October 2, a dance workshop is being held in the Nipissing University boardroom (F303) from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The cost is $10 or $8 for students, seniors and WKP Kennedy Gallery members. Space is limited to 20 people.

A concert follows the workshop, beginning at 7:30 p.m., also taking place in the Nipissing boardroom. Tickets are available for $7 or $5 for students, seniors and WKP Kennedy Gallery members.

Tickets for both the workshop and concert are available from the WKP Kennedy Gallery or at the door.

On Wednesday, October 3, the gamelan performers will be holding two lecture/demonstrations for Nipissing University students. From 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. they will lecture to Music Education students in the Nipissing University theatre (F213). From 6:30 -9:30 p.m. they will workshop with students in the Exploring Music and Culture course on the Nipissing University theatre stage (F213).

Routes and Rhythms is a collective of university faculty and administration and community members. Their mandate includes the promotion of cultural understanding and to further cooperation between the university and the community.
