I am writing this editorial to recognize our local hero, North Bay Battalion forward Nick Paul.

It was an inspiring moment when our city learned it would again be home to an OHL hockey team. We knew it would bring the people of our community together and build on our reputation as a ‘hockey town’. What we did not know is that players like Nick Paul and his teammates would help shape our community and bring attention to important issues facing our youth.

I met Nick in the fall of 2014, when he approached the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation with a desire to make a difference in the mental health of young people.

It was Nick’s idea to launch Points4Paul, where family, friends and fans can make a donation to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit (CAMHU) to celebrate each time he makes a point. Since then, Nick’s initiative has created a ground swell of awareness, publicity and support for children’s mental health in our area.

Not only that, but Points4Paul has sparked a ripple effect. Youth in our community are coming up with their own ways to support and contribute to this important cause. This demonstrates the impact, power and longevity of Nick’s initiative as he inspires others to become involved in their own personal and meaningful way. Nick has attended many events above his commitments as a player, always advocating the importance of giving back to the community.

To date, Points4Paul has raised just under $7,000 for CAMHU – a number which will continue to grow.

As the exciting playoff games continue and Nick continues earning points, his efforts will have a lasting impact on the care available for children in our community.

It has been my pleasure to work alongside Nick in helping him achieve his goal to make a difference in the lives of young people in our community. Reflecting on Nick’s enthusiasm, dedication and perseverance, I can only imagine the impact he will continue to have, wherever his NHL career takes him.

Sincerely,

Tammy Morison
