Media Release

********************

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is launching a new program for youth funded by the Ministry of Health Promotion as part of the Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy. The Youth Action Alliance (YAA) is an after-school youth development program designed to involve youth in tobacco control initiatives that promote the participants' understanding of how, through collective action, they can improve the health of their communities.

The new program is based on a peer-to-peer model of youth engagement and development. Through the program, youth between the ages of 14 to 18 receive training in policy development, leadership, public speaking, creative thinking, organization, and teamwork. The program is youth-led under the guidance and supervision of the Youth Advisor.

The Health Unit is currently in the process of recruiting energetic and experienced youth to staff the new program. For more information and to request a copy of the Peer Leader job description and application, please contact Kim Bouffard, Community Health Promoter at 474-1400 or 1-800-563-2808, ext. 2536 or e-mail at [email protected]. The deadline for applications is Monday, January 22, 2007.
