A new record has been set for the value of building permits issued in North Bay.

Mayor Vic Fedeli announced today that $71,036,406 worth of permits have been issued this year, beating the previous record of $70,500,000.

“To commemorate we’re having a cake,” announced Fedeli, as a two-storey cake in the shape of a building was wheeled out for the mayor and Coun. Dave Mendicino to cut.

Fedeli explained that the previous seven-year average for building permits was $37 million per year.

“When we started out we had two goals; bringing jobs and new assessment to the city,” Fedeli said.

Fedeli explained that the building permit goal was a symbol of everything that the majority of council had campaigned for.

“This was definitely a team effort,” Mendicino said.

The boost in permits was attributed, in part, to the new Home Depot, the Nipissing University residence and the True North dealership.

Fedeli believes that the “new attitude” of the city has created a better business climate in North Bay which, the mayor said, is what attracts the new businesses to North Bay.
