The Ontario government is helping young northerners hone their career skills and find meaningful employment close to home by investing in internships and work placements in Nipissing, MPP Monique Smith announced today.

“Our government is on the side of young people who want to find employment in the North,” Smith said. “By working with our partners in the private sector, we are helping to ensue that our youth have more opportunities close to home.”

Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is investing an additional $1,637,156 in 94 internship and work placements that provide on-the-job training and experience to youth in Northeastern Ontario. Today’s announcement brings the province’s current investment under this program to nearly $6 million for 350 placements across Northern Ontario.

The program helps employers provide work placements and internships to young northerners seeking to launch and build their careers in the North. Students gain valuable work experience in fields as diverse as website programming, graphic design, accounting, welding and others.

“By investing in programs, such as this one, our government is clearly demonstrating that it is committed to addressing the issue of youth out-migration,” said Bartolucci, who is also chair of the NOHFC. “Northern employers should be commended for working with the NOHFC to create meaningful job opportunities for our young people.”
Other McGuinty government initiatives in support of young people include:

- Providing up to $25,000 through the Northern Ontario Young Entrepreneur Program to support business start-ups by young northerners.
- Mobilizing our Northern Development Councils to tackle the issue of youth out-migration from the North.
- Opening the first Northern Ontario School of Medicine to train doctors in the North so they will practice in the North.

These initiatives are part of the government’s Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The Northern Prosperity Plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
