New Equipment for Nursing Students

Nipissing MPP Monique Smith joined Canadore College President Barbara Taylor, and Nipissing University Dean of Arts and Science Dr. Rick Vanderlee for a funding announcement Friday afternoon.

$577,330 dollars were invested to the collaborative nursing program at the college and university.
College and university officials were on hand to observe nursing students running their paces with the state-of-the-art equipment in the collaborative Nursing Simulation Lab works.

Taylor, Vanderlee and Smith all agreed the lab was just one more example of the working partnership between the college and the university.

“This all developed out of parking lot conversations,” states Taylor.

“The BSCN program and the things we see today validate the decision.”

Vanderlee told the group on hand that the simulation patients will make a true difference to students as they are growing tired of practising administering needles on oranges.

“Sometimes there are only 3 pediatric cases on the ward and we have had students graduate without practical pediatrics experience.”

Smith said the funding dollars for the lab is the McGuinty government’s continued effort to address Ontario’s nursing shortage and the need for better training for nurses.

“It’s providing state-of-the-art educational opportunities for our nursing students, so our nursing graduates from these programs will leave here having the best possible training that they can have.”
