Residents will soon have a new place to relax and swim.

A new park, off Four Mile Road near the airport, will be about 2.4 hectares in size and named Algonquin Regiment Park.

The Algonquin Regiment is based in North Bay and has battle honours in both the First and Second World Wars. It's an Infantry Unit in the Canadian Army Reserve, as part of the 33 Canadian Brigade Group.

The idea to honour the Regiment with a park was the dream, and proposed by long-time resident and former school trustee Bill Parfitt.

The property, on the east side of Four Mile Lake, is presently owned by the city.

Road access is being planned

Councillor Mark King says "It will cost almost no money to the city. There is a second piece of property that is not used now but was used years ago for a park in that particular area. The thought process was that it could be sold and the profit from that could be used to develop the other part, so it's a great idea."
