Nipissing University creates Dave Marshall Leadership Awards

Nipissing University is pleased to announce the creation of the Dave Marshall Student Leadership Awards.
The awards will be presented annually, beginning this year, to up to 30 Nipissing students.

An awards ceremony will be held on April 2, 2004,
at Nipissing University.

“The Board of Governors brought the idea forward to recognize Dave Marshall with these leadership awards,” said interim university president, Dennis Mock.

“The awards are a reflection of Dave Marshall
and what he brought to this institution and this community: excellent leadership, a commitment to higher education, a vision for the future and a dedication to community service.”

Dave Marshall served continuously at Nipissing University for 18 years, beginning in 1985 as the dean of the faculty of education and becoming president in 1990.

He resigned as president in 2003 to take over the
role of president at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta on Sept. 1, 2003.

He was instrumental in the growth of the university
and the process that saw the Nipissing receive its charter and become a fully independent degree-granting institution.

Marshall also played an active role provincially, holding executive positions on a number of university and education-related organizations, including the Council
of Ontario Universities and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, among others.

As well, he was named 2002 Community Builder
of the Year by Northgate Square Shopping Centre, was awarded a Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2002 for his service to post secondary education, and was named the 2002 Kiwanis Club of North Bay’s Citizen of the Year.

“Nipissing University has always taken great pride in providing an environment where leadership is nourished, so it is no surprise that Nipissing would establish a way of recognizing students who excel in this area. But it is a wonderful surprise and honor that these awards have been created in my name,” said Marshall.

“It’s important for the university to honour student leaders, those individuals who excel academically as well as in extra curricular and community endeavors. And it is important for everyone in the university to live that ideal as role models. Plus, Sheila and I are really looking forward to coming back to North Bay for the ceremony to see old friends and visit the finest undergraduate university in the country!"

Students will be selected for the award from three categories:

Constituency Recipients, in which one student from each of the 10 departments in the faculty of arts and science and the three divisions within the faculty of education will be nominated; Central Recipients, in which up to 10 students will be nominated by any member of the Nipissing University community; and Community Recipients, in which up to seven students will be selected based on nominations from the local community.

Students can be nominated using an online nomination form, or by a nomination letter.
