New arena decision delayed til after the election

Because we had so many interesting secondary private proposals that came out of that process, it was deemed by the committee that we would look at those opportunities

It will be up to the new council to decide where a replacement for the aging Sam Jacks West Ferris Arena will be built.

The chair of the city’s arena committee, Mark King said previously that the Omischl Sports Complex is the preferred city-owned site, but competing bids have come from the North Bay Mall and a company proposing a Pinewood Park Drive site.

The committee will meet again Friday.

King told CKAT news that staff is still looking at the various private proposals that came in.

"The main issue at this particular point is the private sector proposals and what those look like. Since mid-August up until this point, it's been virtually impossible to get everybody together to look at that process so the Friday morning meeting will involve a presentation from the CAO (Keith Robicheau) with respect to the different options that are out there.

“Because we had so many interesting secondary private proposals that came out of that process, it was deemed by the committee that we would look at those opportunities and see what they would present,” he says.

King says the meeting should help set the table for the next council to make the final decision on location.

The meeting is set for 7:45 a.m. at City Hall.
