Nipissing MPP and Minister of Revenue Monique Smith today announced that the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario are allocating $280,000 to help fund a new rental housing project that will create four units of affordable housing under the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program.

“This allocation to Powassan will provide safe, affordable housing to some of the most vulnerable among us, and helps to confirm the values of compassion and caring that make our province such a special place,” Smith said.

The project is sponsored by the Almaguin Highlands Community Living, and the units will be occupied by low-income families and individuals with special needs.

“One of the McGuinty government’s fundamental goals is to help provide affordable housing for Ontarians who need it,” said Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “This allocation represents a significant step in addressing the need for more affordable housing in Powassan.”

The new Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for 20,000 households in Ontario.
