The Near North District School Board has released the results of Grade 9 mathematics testing done through the province's Education Quality Assessment Office.

Further information is included in the following news release issued today by the board:

The results at both the Academic and Applied levels indicate that a higher percentage of students are meeting or exceeding the provincial standard than in the 2002-2003 school year.

According to EQAO’s reporting method for all students, 58% of students in the academic program and 26% of students in the applied program achieved the provincial standard.

Based on those students who participated in the test, 59% of students in the academic program and 28% of students in the applied program achieved the provincial standard.

These results represent a significant improvement for Near North District School Board students of five per cent at the academic level and nine per cent at the applied level.

The Near North District School Board is strongly committed to the improvement of student results in mathematics.

Key board initiatives are underway to enhance instruction in mathematics, and staff are involved in province-wide initiatives which focus on the improvement of instruction in mathematics particularly at the applied level.

“We are pleased that through the hard work of teaching and program resource staff and school administrators, Near North results have improved more rapidly than those of the province, and that our applied results surpassed those of the province,” said Bill O’Hallarn, superintendent of program and schools.
