The Near North District School Board has named Krista Tucker Petrick as its new principal at Chippewa Secondary School.

The Board says she will take over the position on Monday, January 31.

Tucker Petrick takes over the position from interim principal Wanda Hill, who filled in the position in late September after Julie Beaudoin resigned from the position in late September.

Beaudoin left the position on the same day as West Ferris principal Andy Gagne, who also resigned.

"She is thrilled to be returning to the north and to the hometown of her partner and his family. Krista continues to be a lifelong learner, having made education her fourth career," the Board stated in an email to parents and guardians.

"She has been a court reporter and front-line litigation clerk for the Ministry of the Attorney General, a probation officer for youth with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, and most recently a vice-principal in the Waterloo Region District School Board.

"Krista is committed to assisting teachers in developing assessment and evaluation and curriculum knowledge and sourcing authentic and respectful course content. She is an advocate for students in-risk and a proponent of introducing culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy, restorative justice and restorative practices in all school boards in the province. Krista Tucker Petrick advocates for equity in all she does and willingly shares her equity learning journey."

Her long career in the public service has supported the roles she has held as a teacher, department head and as the First Nation, Métis, and Inuit/equity resource teacher with the Peel District School Board, a vice-principal with the Waterloo Region District School Board, instructor for OISE Continuing Education and now principal of Chippewa Secondary School.

Tucker Petrick is also a Doctoral Candidate with York University finishing up her thesis proposal on Settler Teacher/Indigenous Community Member Collaborations and Their Impact on Education.

The Board adds that Petrick will work alongside acting principal Wanda Hill the week of Jan. 24-28, 2022, and will become the principal of Chippewa Secondary School on Monday, Jan. 31.
