MVC closes Hwy 17E at Mattawa Update

Petawawa - At approximately 11:30pm on February 17, 2011, Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment officers attended Highway 17, west of McIsaac Road in Head Clara and Maria Township, the scene of a collision involving 5 tractor-trailers.
Investigation indicates that a transport was west bound on Hwy 17 when it lost control and jack knifed across 3 lanes of traffic on a hill. 4 other transports which were east bound upon approaching the jack knifed transport, attempted to avoid hitting it, and entered the south bound ditch.

The driver in transport # 3 was transported to Ottawa Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His passenger was transported to Deep River Hospital with minor injuries.

OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) is at the scene, along with OPP Commercial Motor Vehicle Investigators.

Local Fire Departments as well as the County of Renfrew Paramedics Services assisted at the scene.

Update - Detour for East bound traffic on Hwy 17 is Hwy 11 to Hwy 60 to Hwy 41 and then back to Hwy 17 around Pembroke.

Detour does not start in Mattawa. Traffic is being stopped in Mattawa and turned back around to North Bay and then south on Hwy 11.

We just heard from our Arts and Entertainment Editor Robert Palangio, who has been in the Mattawa traffic line up since 9am, that he was just informed the closure will be in place until tomorrow (Saturday) noon.

He says motorists were advised to get to Ottawa via Huntsville through Algonquin Park.

East bound traffic is diverted at Mattawa. Please follow detours.

The road continues to be closed as the investigation continues into the cause of the collision.

Mattawa OPP advise motorists that Hwy 17E, from Mattawa to Deux Rivieres is closed due to a Motor vehicle collision.

There is no detour at this time and the estimated duration of the closure is unknown
