Out of adjustment brakes and brake system defects are common causes for commercial vehicles being placed out of service during roadside inspections. Poorly adjusted or defective brakes reduce the braking capacity of commercial vehicles and further inhibit their stopping distance. Under ideal conditions, the braking capacity of commercial vehicles is twice as far as that for passenger vehicles.

Brake Safety Awareness Week is an annual event that is promoted through the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, which is designed to reduce the number of motor vehicle collisions caused by faulty braking systems on commercial vehicles. The Ministry of Transportation uses this opportunity to work closely with the trucking industry to educate commercial vehicle operators, drivers and mechanics of the importance of proper brake inspection, maintenance and operation.

In support of Brake Safety Awareness Week, Ministry of Transportation Enforcement Officers will be hosting a public display to answer questions and provide information to the trucking industry on commercial vehicle braking systems. This event will be held on Thursday, August 30th from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm at the former Fifth Wheel Truck Stop on Pinewood Park Drive in North Bay.
