Motorists face bridge work, speed reductions on Highway 64 this summer

'For a week at most in the coming months, there will be a temporary road closure of Highway 64'

Ontario's Ministry of Transportation has resumed construction on an important link between Highway 11 north of North Bay and West Nipissing.

Crews already have Highway 64 at Marten River Bridge reduced to a single lane with traffic controlled by traffic signals. The speed limit is reduced to 60 kilometres per hour at the approaches to the signals.

The MTO says the typical delay at single-lane closures is less than five minutes but motorists could encounter up to four single-lane closures controlled through the use of traffic control personnel.

MTO Northeastern Region's Kristin Franks says the rehabilitation of Highway 64 between Highways 11 and 17 will include "drainage improvements, resurfacing, and structural rehabilitation of the Marten River Bridge. It will also include upgrading lighting at the intersection of Highway 64 and Highway 11."

King's Highway 64 is maintained by the province and connects Highway 69 north of the French River with Highway 11 at Marten River, traversing Highway 17 west of Sturgeon Falls.

In addition, "For a week at most in the coming months, there will be a temporary road closure of Highway 64 for the replacement of Unnamed Creek Culvert, south of the junction of Highway 575 at Field," advises Franks. "The public will be made aware of these closures in advance by local media, as well as signage at Verner, Sturgeon Falls, Field and the junction of Highway 11 and Highway 64."

The detour will follow Highway 17 from Sturgeon Falls to Verner and Highway 575 from Verner to Field.

"Alternate access will also be available via Highway 539," adds Franks. "All-terrain vehicle (ATV) passage will be provided at all times for local residents."

The $12,287,169 contract was awarded to J&P Leveque Brothers Haulage Ltd., based out of Bancroft, Ont. Construction is anticipated to be complete by mid-October.
