On December 6th, 1989, 25-year-old Marc Lépine, armed with a legally obtained semi-automatic rifle and a hunting knife, École Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec and shot twenty-eight people before killing himself.

Lépine started the attack in a classroom at the university separating the male and female students. Proclaimed he was 'fighting feminism', and shot all nine women that were in that room, killing six. For 22 minutes he moved through school, specifically targeting women to shoot -- he killed fourteen women and injured four men and ten women before turning the gun on himself.

In a suicide note Lépine claimed that feminists were ruining his life.

This weekend marks the 20th anniversary of the tragedy and locally Nipissing University Women's Centre and Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre are holding an event to remember the Ecole Polytechnique massacre in Montreal.

They will host a Walk of Silence for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women starting with a vigil and prayer service in Lee Park Saturday at 4:30pm.
