Man steals groceries, then assaults store owner

The owner of the grocery store intercepted the man at the doorway.

A grocery store owner in Elliot Lake watched as a man stole groceries from his shelves, then was assaulted when he tried to stop him.

OPP say the crime took place on Saturday, December 10, at 5 p.m.

The theft was in progress at the local grocery store. 

The owner of the grocery store intercepted the man at the doorway as the thief was leaving with a full cart of groceries. 

A fight took place between the man and the store owner and the man fled on foot. 

A witness followed the man and notified police when the thief got into a car. Police found the vehicle and stopped it.

They were surprised when they recognized the man to be the same person who had stolen a cart full of groceries two days earlier.   

Jan Rene Wilen, 43, of Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Two counts of theft Under $5,000
  • Assault,

Wilen is scheduled to appear in court on February 7, 2017.
