Man sets up barricade, refuses to surrender

Due to the nature of the incident and the location the local schools were placed in lockdown.

Police were forced to put local Wawa schools into lockdown mode this afternoon after a man barricaded himself and refused to surrender.

OPP say at approximately 12:38 pm members of the Wawa Detachment were called to an incident to a home in Wawa.

When police arrived they found that that the male occupant had barricaded himself inside the home.

Due to the nature of the incident and the location the local schools were placed in lockdown.

The OPP Emergency Response Team Crime Unit and Tactics and Rescue Unit started negotiations to try and get the man to surrender peacefully.

At approximately 2:25 pm the man surrendered to police and was arrested without further incident.

A 27 year old man was arrested and charged with:

  • Adult- Forcible Confinement

  • Adult- Uttering Threats Cause Death or Bodily Harm- Spousal

  • Adult- Assault – Spousal 

  • Adult- Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The man was taken to Sault Ste. Marie for bail hearing.
