A man has been charged with extortion, after finding a woman's wallet and demanding sex for its return.

North Bay police say a few days ago, a woman lost her wallet while she was at the movies.

A man she didn't know later found the wallet and looked up the woman's profile on social media.

Then Friday evening he contacted her through the social media website to ask her if she had lost her wallet.

The woman said yes, that she was the owner of the lost wallet. Police say the man then demanded sexual favours in exchange for the wallet’s return.

The woman agreed to meet the man at a designated time and place, and immediately called police and told them of the online exchange.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 8th, police arrived in an unmarked car at the location where the man had arranged to meet his victim.

He was immediately arrested.

The woman’s wallet was found on the man, who was then taken to police headquarters.

A 23-year-old Haileybury man was held in custody for a bail hearing and charged with:

  • One count of extortion;
  • One count of theft under $5,000; and
  • One count of breach of recognizance.
