Long-term residents of North Bay will remember former constable Jack Dempsey.

He passed away suddenly Sunday in his home in Glen Robertson, Ontario. He was 73.

Jack was with the North Bay Police Department serving from 1969-1998.

"Jack had a keen eye and could recall a license plate and make and model of a vehicle without hesitation," reads his obituary.

"Jack was a proud devoted member of the North Bay Police force where he serviced the people of North Bay for 29 years.

"On September 4, 2007 Premier Dalton McGuinty recognized Jack for his Bravery at which time he was also awarded by The Board of Police Commissioners City of North Bay a Certificate of Commendation For Bravery, on August 23, 1989, The Governor General of Canada awarded Jack, The Police Exemplary Service Medal, in recognition of twenty years of loyal and meritorious service to law enforcement in Canada.

"Jack was known as the gentle giant until he meant business. He could not walk five minutes in North Bay without someone wanting to say ‘hi Jack’. He was also known to help anyone in need. Jack had many stories to tell and loved socializing and spending time at Tim Hortons in North Bay. It didn’t matter where you went, someone knew Jack Dempsey. If you were out with Jack you knew his sidebar conversations would last hours on end."
