FIRST Team 1305, Near North Student Robotics Initiative, Iced Cubed has returned from its first event of the 2019 FIRST Robotics Competition season, Destination: Deep Space.

At the Georgian College event in Barrie this past weekend, robot Kepler finished first after the qualification rounds under the guidance of its five-person drive team. After selecting an alliance including FIRST Teams 4476 W.AF.F.L.E.S from Kingston and 781 Kinetic Knights from Kincardine, they collectively went on to capture the 1st place blue banner.

In addition, the team was given the Innovation in Control Award. The team won this event last year and it was the team’s fourth consecutive district event win.

The team is now preparing for next weekend as they hope to defend their North Bay District Event title at Nipissing University.

This year’s FIRST robotics challenge is “Destination: Deep Space”. Two alliances of three teams compete on a 27-by-54-foot field. Each match starts with a Sandstorm where a screen is lowered and drivers’ view is obscured for the first 15 seconds.

Points are scored by placing hatch panels (disks with velcro) on the rocket or the cargo ship and then adding cargo (balls) to be held in place by the hatch panels.

The 30 second end game involves three robots in an alliance climbing onto a podium-like structure to gain more points. FIRST Team 1305 is proud to represent the North Bay and area community.
