Last week Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipissing–Timiskaming, on behalf of the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) and the Hon. Dr. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, honoured nine constituents in recognition of their diligent action to save the life of another person.

The CEA takes workplace safety seriously and organizes a yearly ceremony to recognize individuals who contribute to a life-saving effort within the context of their everyday work.

Earlier this year, nine First Responders of Otto Holden Generating Station Mr. Joe Anderson, Mr. Mike Andrews, Mr. Gilles Barriere, Mr. Paul Dupras, Mr. Brent Goodwin, Mr. Ed Hong, Mr. Kyle Kelly, Mr. Own McCarron, and Mr. Ed McColm bravely applied their training and demonstrated their commitment to health and safety by offering swift medical assistance to another person who had suffered a serious electrical contact injury at the Otto Holden Generating Station.

“These nine men deserve to be recognized,” said MP Aspin. “Their passion and dedication to their jobs and the service of helping other people is exemplary. They are a credit to Nipissing-Timiskaming, Mattawa, and indeed our country.

The First Responders’ immediate care to the injured worker mitigated a much more serious injury. It also contributed to the better recovery of the victim, who was taken to Mattawa Hospital for medical attention until he was transferred to Sunnybrook in Toronto for further care.

Mr. Aspin encourages constituents who may know any of these nine men to take the time to congratulate them for their outstanding service to their community.
