The Near North District School Board is very pleased to announce that Land of Lakes Public School students Lauren Andersen and Fiona Weaver won Silver at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Toronto in May with their project ‘Bag Those Bugs.’
They were awarded a silver medal in the Junior Division at the awards ceremony at Roy Thompson Hall. They received a $2000 entrance scholarship to the University of Western Ontario and a $700 cash award.
Fiona and Lauren investigated bacterial growth in reusable grocery bags pre and post washing. From their findings they developed a compostable liner to reduce cross contamination in the bags. Their project was in the Health Challenge category and was a continuation of their project from the 2010 Canada Wide Science Fair in Peterborough for which they were also awarded a silver medal.
