The Nosbonsing Get Outdoors Club is pleased to announce a children's fishing derby, Saturday July 8th at the Government Dock, Big Moose Road on Lake Nosbonsing.

This event is part of the Canada wide celebration, National Fishing Week, July 1st to 9th. For more information about National Fishing Week, visit www.catchfishing.com. As well, the weekend of July 7 to 9, is the Ontario Family Fishing Weekend: Fish licence-free! Take a friend fishing!

If you or someone you know would like to try fishing in Ontario waters for the first time (or the first time in a long time), circle the weekend of July 7-9 on your calendar. For those three days only (12:01 a.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday), Canadian residents can enjoy the fun of fishing in Ontario without a licence during the annual Ontario Family Fishing Weekend.

Pack up your tackle box the night before and head out with your rod, reel and life jacket to the Government dock on Big Moose Road. The fishing begins at 9:00am until noon and for $5.00 your morning of angling is capped off with a barbeque hot dog and soft drink. Volunteers from the East Nipissing Hunter and Anglers Association will take kids out on the water. Please RSVP to Joanne St. Denis if you would like to go out in one of the boats. Officers from the North Bay OPP will be on hand to assist.

The Astorville event is part of an exciting new grassroots program supported by the Nosbonsing Get Outdoors Club, the East Nipissing Hunter and Anglers Association, the North Bay OPP, Real Fishing's Bob Izumi, the Fishing Forever Foundation and Canadian Tire, to encourage youngsters to enjoy the benefits of recreational fishing.

According to Bob Izumi, it’s only natural that the Police are involved with helping children. "Police officers spend their entire careers protecting children", states Izumi. "Events like the one in Astorville are a perfect way for kids to learn that these dedicated men and women care about them as individuals, not as potential young offenders."
Izumi, whose late father Joe always enjoyed introducing children to fishing, has long been an advocate of using recreational fishing as a means of bringing families closer and teaching important life lessons to children.
