Jumping for joy at Legion Track Camp

'It’s to teach them the basic mechanics of throwing, the basic mechanics of jumping and the basic mechanics of running'

Beau Herron loves playing baseball and basketball.

But for the second week, the 11-year-old has put Track and Field on the top of his priority list.

“I like running, to be honest, it’s just fun to run,” said Herron.

“I learned out to throw a javelin properly and stuff and run the 100 meters better and the mechanics and stuff like that.”

Herron is among dozens of young area athletes between six and 12 who are taking part in the North Bay Legion Track Club summer camps which take place every week in the month of July at WJ Fricker Public School.

Jan Faucon is the North Bay Legion Track and Field Club Program Director.  She’s been involved with the club for more than 25 years, and now is seeing the children of former Legion Track Club athletes learning the fundamentals this summer.

“It’s to teach them the basic mechanics of throwing, the basic mechanics of jumping and the basic mechanics of running and then as their skill improves then you can incorporate more skill related components of something like javelin or shot put or running long jump or triple jump, but it all starts with the basic fundamental movement, run, jump, throw,” explained Faucon.

Faucon says the most important thing for the young athletes is to leaving knowing the proper techniques.

“We very much stress body positioning so that injuries do not compound,” said Faucon.
