The North Bay and District Association for Community Living has recently renovated a portion of FJ Dellandrea to accommodate the Basic Literacy program, offered to clients in partnership with the Near North District School Board.

The program, supported by the Board, has been developed on the principles that everyone in need of developmental support, live in the community in a state of dignity and have the opportunity to share and participate effectively.

Both partners say literacy means having the ability to read, write, speak and understand, and it is this combination of skills that is necessary for everyday life in the home, at work, in education and in the community.

The Basic Literacy program is designed to reduce barriers and students work to develop life skills in mathematics, reading, writing, WHIMIS, First Aid, nutrition and resume writing.

The training plans are suited to each of the students’ individual goals and career objectives.
