Jay Aspin returned as Near North Board Chair

'We are entering our second year of significant reformation towards regaining the public trust and reputation of the Near North District School Board'

Trustees at the Near North School Board has confirmed Jay Aspin for another term as chairman last night. 

In his acceptance speech, Aspin outlined to trustees the Board's accomplishments over the past year. 

They include:

  • The Fricker school  transition decision for 2019-2020
  • The establishment of a Director’s Accountability Framework
  • The sale of two former elementary school properties – King George and Trusler
  • The closure of a secondary school - Widdifield
  • A reduction of two senior officers at the executive level
  • A Director of Education change
  • The commencement of a restructuring process
  • The commencement of a Multi-Year Plan to replace the current plan

Aspin told the trustees that the Board has turned a corner in its efforts.

"We are entering our second year of significant reformation towards regaining the public trust and reputation of the Near North District School Board. Towards that end, we have significant challenges for the year ahead."

Aspin named:

  • Full implementation of the Ombudsman’s Report
  • Completion of the secondary school programming
  • Completion and implementation of a comprehensive Governance Model  
  • Completion of a comprehensive multi-year plan including input from all stakeholders
  • Building a Fricker elementary school and a Parry Sound secondary school
  • Placement of a new Board Director

"To achieve our goals, as we have done in our first year, it is essential that we continue to work together as a strong team with the end goal ….the best education the Near North can provide," said Aspin in his speech.

John Cochrane from Parry Sound was confirmed as Vice-Chair for the second year.
