From hula hoops to broomball, folk art painting to skating, winter fun gets a new definition at Ferris Glen Public School as teachers launch their first ever Winter Wake Up Week, February 9 - 13, 2009.

"Winter provides a great opportunity to explore outdoor sports like snowshoeing and sliding as well as a time to focus on indoor arts activities", stated G. Lynch, Principal of the school. "Our Winter Wake Up week is a collaborative effort by our teaching team to bring unique and exciting opportunities to the students."

Local artists will be working with the children in the visual arts field - featuring folk art painting by Mrs. Melanie Malkowski, sculptures in clay with Mr. Peter Sloan and sketching and printmaking with Mrs. Liz Lott. The performing arts activities will be led by Mr. Jim Harney and Miss Jana Brogan who will present a workshop on music, myths and mud.

Students will also participate in physical fitness activities such as snowshoeing, broomball, sliding and ministicks. On Thursday, February 12, the entire school will take part in a skating outing. The week will wrap up with a scavenger hunt, hot chocolate and treats.

"The week has been specifically designed to incorporate cross curriculum education in a hands on learning environment" stated G. Lynch. Regular classes will be in session for half days with the special activities filling out the other half of the day.
