The Northeast Mental Health Centre hopes to change the fortunes of people diagnosed with mental illnesses through an innovative educational session that will help reduce the stigma associated with the disease and educate local businesses about mental illness in the workplace.

The session held at the Capitol Centre, Galaxy Circle, Wednesday, for Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), which runs September 30 - October 6, 2007. Guest speaker will be Dr. Susan Adams, Psychiatrist-in-Chief, Northeast Mental Health Centre as well, an employer and consumer shared their personal experiences with mental illness.

"We're using this event to educate local business leaders about mental illnesses," says Bob Cunningham, President and CEO of the Northeast Mental Health Centre, which is organizing the initiative. "We hope this session will get the attention of community leaders and contribute to a better understanding of mental illnesses."

Dr. Susan Adams, Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the Northeast Mental Health Centre says, “With costs to the Canadian Economy estimated at $30 billion due to mental illness, it’s crucial that we educate business leaders about mental illness in the workplace so that they can help workers suffering from such illnesses to become and remain, productive in the work force."

A goal of MIAW is to ensure future generations are not impeded by the stigma currently surrounding mental illness. More has to be done to ensure that people suffering from serious mental illnesses get the care, support, treatment and rehabilitation they need.
The Northeast Mental Health Centre (NEMHC) is the largest specialized mental health service provider in northeastern Ontario with campuses in North Bay and Sudbury.
