Injured deer finally saved

Witnesses say the MNRF cleaned the wounds and cared for the deer until it was able to get back up onto its feet and walk away

An injured deer seen in the West Ferris area with a wire around its torso has finally got the help it needed.

Back in June residents off Balmoral Crescent in West Ferris noticed a deer visiting the area with something wrapped around its chest.

The MNRF had been contacted back in mid-June, but on Tuesday afternoon, the MNRF was able to safely tranquilize the animal and remove the band which was described as a wire from a square panel fence.

Witnesses say the MNRF cleaned the wounds and cared for the deer until it was able to get back up onto its feet and walk away.

Members of Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary also helped with the Tuesday’s rescue along with area residents who allowed the MNRF to go on their property to access the injured animal.

Back in June, Balmoral Crescent resident Harry Sloan had witnessed the deer in the area.

At that time he saw that the deer was moving well, but he could tell hat the young animal was in distress.

“I could tell the rope has been there for a while and it is growing into it. Its back spine at the top is raw, it opens right into its spine, and it goes around into its rib cage around its side and the hair is all gone of course - the hair is rubbing off because it is digging in,” Sloan said back in June.
