The Nipissing Regional Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association held their annual Walk for Mental Health on Sunday.

The walk focuses on building a community which accepts people with mental illness and promotes mental health

Board President of the Nipissing Branch retired staff sergeant Ted Whittle was joined by ohter members of the North Bay Police Service to show their support of the walk. He says it is time for to take the stigma away from mental illness and treat it like any other health crises people face.

“There’s a certain stigma that goes with mental illness where people tend to hide the fact that any member of the family or themselves have suffered from mental illness.”

“If somebody was to break a leg they’d go to the hospital and it’s fixed but people tend not to anything when something is wrong with the way they are thinking or when they are actually mentally ill with either depression or Psychophrenia or any other type of mental illness.”

Whittle says events like the walk offer an opportunity for people to come together and talk openly and honestly about what is happening.

“People realize that they’re not alone that the family is not alone and they don’t have to hide it.”
