The industry's slogan is “If it is not grown it's mined,” and in celebration of Mining Week the North Bay Mining Association (NBMA) with the support of the local branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining (CIM) hosted 250 area grade school students to an fun interactive day of mining.

Earlier in the week the students gathered at Canadore College Commerce Court Campus were they were introduced to how the mining industry, which adds $19 million in the local economy alone each year, impacts their daily lives.

The students took part in a number of activities including operating shaft sinking equipment models and panning for gold.

Chair of the Mining Week committee Nathalie Bester tells BayToday that the committee wants the students to understand that the mining industry not only impacts on the items they use every day, but with more than 65 mining related companies in the area it is an industry they could pursue for their future careers.
