Callander Volunteer Firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire on 130 King St. around 10pm on February 29.

Witnesses say a city of North Bay police officer on routine patrol smelt smoke in the downtown core and went to investigate. Upon arrival the smoke was already pouring from the home. The officer was able to assist, lone resident, Marius Robidas, from the home. Robidas was then taken by ambulance to North Bay General Hospital where he was being treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters had believed that they had extinguished the fire by midnight but were planning on keeping a small crew on the scene throughout the night to ensure the fire would not re-ignite.

The cause of the blaze and extent of the damage is still unknown.
