Hope shines through at Run for the Cure

“Prior to her departure, I had known four months before, I was carrying the same cancer,” she said. “But when you have children, they all come first and the mom can deal with it later.”

Runners ran in rain and walkers walked wet, but smiles and high spirits are what people brought to the waterfront for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.

The annual fundraiser sees dozens of communities across Canada come together to honour their lost loved ones, support friends, and family fighting, and raise funds and awareness to keep other from suffering breast cancer in the future.

Honourary survivor, Mary Lynn Roy, spoke to the rain-soaked crowd Sunday morning, a smile on her face and optimism in her heart, despite the personal struggles she’s been through.

“I never thought I would be standing here one day, with so many good people out there,” she said. “My standing here today is like saying hi to my daughter, who passed away from breast cancer in 2010.”

Her optimism shone through the gloomy clouds above as she shared her story.

“Prior to her departure, I had known four months before, I was carrying the same cancer,” she said. “But when you have children, they all come first and the mom can deal with it later.”

Roy looked onto the crowd, a smile on her face and explained how blessed she felt to have won her battle with breast cancer and how still blessed she felt seeing so many supporters.

“As I look around today at all of you, I think, that’s a heck of a lot of good angels,” she said.

Director, Melanie Gainforth was glad to see everyone having a wonderful time despite the rain and said they were on target to raise $60,000 this year—adding to the grand total of over $1 million over the last 11 years.

This event is a 5k or 1k walk or run to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. It is the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s largest annual fundraising event for breast cancer research and awareness. 60 communities across Canada participate during the CIBC Run for the Cure.
