Heavy snow and cold gives reason for optimism at area ski hills

"If we get 30 cm or more that will start to make a difference."

Yes, the snow has finally arrived and that’s good news for both Laurentian Ski hill and Antoine Mountain in Mattawa.

At Laurentian Ski Hill, General Manager Trish Pecore says they started making snow again on Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m.

Pecore says today’s big dump of snow will definitely help.

“If we got only 15 cm of snow that would squish to only 3 cm, so that much won’t make a lot of difference on the rugged terrain,” admitted Pecore.

“If we get 30 cm or more that will start making a difference.”

Meantime, at Antoine Mountain, the hill is utilizing its snowmaking equipment and the Antoine Mountain Facebook page says they started making snow again around 4 a.m. on Monday morning.

“By 6 a.m. Monday there were three guns and one wand blowing snow all over the mountain,” it was stated on the Antoine Mountain Facebook page.

“All guns and wands will be fired up and making snow. Please stay tuned for updates and an opening announcement!”

While neither hill is making a specific time yet for opening, Antoine Mountain is hoping to open on December 31st.
