A jubilant Renaud, with wife Peggy at his side, paid a visit to the Heart and Stroke office on Main Street today to pick up his winnings from the early bird draw held this past June 26th ... a cheque for a cool $300,000.
Because the number didn’t come up as the Heart and Stroke on Call ID the couple didn’t believe they had won calling it a mean joke to play on someone, but when he called the head office in Toronto, the tune quickly changed.
Renaud, 60, an award winning country music singer/songwriter was laid off from the job he held for three decades at Dyno Nobel, formerly ETI, two years ago and has been struggling ever since to keep a steady income, and says this win takes a big pressure off of his shoulders.
He says the first thing they will do with the winnings is pay off the mortgage, after that he and Peggy will help out their kids and possibly take a trip to Vegas.
Renaud, says he has played the lottery since it was introduced over 10 years ago and thought he was doing well last year when he won a prize of a massager and crockpot never thinking he would win a prize this large. But he contends regardless the size of the prize he will continue to support the cause as he has an affinity to the charity.
"My father passed away at age 50 from heart disease."
Renaud, a member of the The Nipissing Country Music Association's Wall of Honour as well as the Northern Ontario County Music Association's Great Northern Opry in Sault Ste. Marie, says the win also gives him an opportunity to work on some music ventures with his son Chris.
And the good news is his ticket is re-entered into the sold out lottery where Renaud stands a chance to win one of the 10 grand prizes to be drawn July 26th:
