This past Wednesday (June 26th) staff North East Community Care Access Centre staff member Tricia McDonald offered up her locks for cancer care for kids.

“When the North East Community Care Access Centre Cancer fundraising team approached Marc Lachance co-owner and stylist of Hair Designers North Bay, to come on board with our latest venture, it was an immediate ‘Yes and what can we do to help’,” notes team member Nancy Avery.

Avery explains that McDonald, who has had her long braid most of her life as it is a tradition for this aboriginal first nation woman to wear her hair long, had often commented that if she ever cut her hair it would have to be for a really good reason and she found one.

McDonald chose Angel Hair an organization based out of Toronto that accepts donations of human hair to be made into wigs for children who are battling cancer and through treatment have lost their hair.

“There is a criteria that must be met and one of the requirements is the hair donation must be at least 12 inches in length. Tricia donated 21 inches of her hair. Tricia’s coworkers think she looks amazing,” note Avery.

“We had a great deal of fun getting ready for the “big cut and color change” with stylist Charise Mondoux who was so very understanding and patient during the entire process.”

“We believe that not only has Tricia made a change in her own life but she has made a positive change for children who face the side effects of cancer as well. We are very proud of our coworker. We would also like to say thank you to all the clients that were present at Hair Designers while we made such a fuss taking photos and bringing encouragement to our colleague. We thank them for their patience and understanding. It is just another example of how giving our community really is.”
