On May 17th, something as simple as buying your lunch could make a difference to more than 31,000 athletes across Canada. On Thursday May 17th, SUBWAY(R) Restaurants across Canada will donate a percentage of all sandwich sales to Special Olympics sport programs in communities throughout the country in the third annual SUBWAY Special Olympics Day.

"We're excited to once again support Special Olympics programs through this very successful annual event," said Chuck Roy, SUBWAY(R) Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust (SFAFT) Chainwide Board Representative for Canada. "We've been thrilled with the response from our customers in previous years. In the past two years alone we've raised almost $600,000 for Special Olympics Canada thanks to the support of Canadians across the country."

Of the charitable funds raised on SUBWAY(R) Special Olympics Day, 75 per cent of those charitable funds will be used to further develop Special Olympics Canada's grassroots sport programs in communities across the country, while the remaining 25 per cent will be devoted to Special Olympics Canada's work in staging National Games and preparing Team Canada to represent the country at the 2007 World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.

"In Canada, there are more than 800,000 people with an intellectual disability but only 31,000 athletes are involved with Special Olympics," said Ms. Deborah Bright, President and CEO of Special Olympics Canada. "The generous support of Canadians and SUBWAY(R) Restaurants enables us to develop and maintain sport programs in communities across the country."

In October 2007, Special Olympics Canada is sending 117 individuals (83 athletes, 22 coaches and 12 mission staff) to the 2007 World Summer Games in Shanghai, China to join more than 7,000 athletes from 160 countries. Team Canada athletes will compete in the sports of track & field, swimming, powerlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, 10 Pin bowling, soccer and softball.
