The North Bay & District Girls Hockey Association will be changing its nickname for the start of the 2023-24 season.

The association, which has been around since 1998, will be retiring the longtime Ice Boltz nickname in favour of the "Junior Lakers."

A motion was made at the association's annual general meeting Sunday night and the new name passed by a vote of 49 to 28.

With the motion, the association will also change its colors from black, gold and white to green, blue and white.

The association made the change to "Junior Lakers" to recognize the longtime development partnership between the girls association and the Nipissing Lakers varsity women's hockey team which has selected dozens of former Ice Boltz as part of that university team's model headed by former Ice Boltz U18 AA head coach Darren Turcotte.

The association is expected to hold a formal media conference with Nipissing University Athletics in the near future.
