Powassan – Henri Giroux will announce tomorrow that he will seek the New Democratic Party’s nomination in the riding of Nipissing, for October’s provincial election.

Giroux, Regional Vice-President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) for Northern Ontario, and member of the union’s National Executive Board and Ontario Executive, will make the announcement at a North Bay and District Labour Council meeting on Tuesday, May 17, at 6:00 pm, at 573 Fraser Street North, in North Bay, Ontario.

“The NDP values of community building and fairness are my values, and I am anxious to put them to work for the people of Nipissing,” says Giroux. “All my life I have worked to bring people together and promote social justice, and I think the people of Nipissing have a real opportunity to send someone to Queen’s Park who will truly represent them and improve their quality of life – I want to be that voice of positive change.”

Born in North Bay, Ontario, and raised in the small town of Corbeil, with his 14 brothers and sisters, Henri Giroux is the father of five children. The Powassan resident, and past NDP candidate, has been a labour and community activist since 1979. He is also a member of the board of the Sudbury United Way, as labour representative. Prior to assuming his current national and provincial leadership roles in CUPE, Henri has been president of CUPE Local 146 for 26 years, representing long-term care workers at Cassellholme Home for the Aged, in North Bay. In the past, he was co-chair of the North Bay Health Coalition. He also served as President of the North Bay CUPE Council and President of the North Bay and District Labour Council.

“Being a Northerner, and having a real sense of community, has helped me understand the issues we face in Nipissing, and I look forward to advocating on our behalf in the provincial legislature,” says Giroux. “I invite the people of Nipissing to support my candidacy and do something positive for our communities.”
