Getting set for Relay for Life is a labour of love

Once again the good folks of Wing 22 and the Home Depot assembled on the field at CFB North Bay and with military precision transformed the empty space into tent city for the 13th annual Relay for Life event that kicks off Friday night.
Once again the good folks of Wing 22 and the Home Depot assembled on the field at CFB North Bay and with military precision transformed the empty space into tent city for the 13th annual Relay for Life event that kicks off Friday night.

The 12-hour event is less than a day away, and organizers again believe they have the greatest event to date.

Wing Logistics and Engineering Officer Delaina Brown says without the tremendous dedication of the volunteers each and every year the job just wouldn’t get done. She says it is passion that drives them and they are hard pressed to find a volunteer in the group that doesn’t have a story of cancer to tell.

“I think you could talk to a lot of people here everybody's been touched by cancer one way or another … it could be immediate family or it could be you know a friend of a friend but we definitely all been touched.”

“For myself I have my mother who is diagnosed with breast cancer as well as ovarian cancer a few years back and now my sister-in-law has non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.”

North Bay residents are encouraged to come up to CFB Soccer Field at 7 p.m. with The Survivors’ Victory Lap. Folks are encouraged to line the track and cheer on the hundreds of cancer survivors as they take the lap in celebration of their courage and strength. This lap by survivors offers hope and encouragement to those who are still fighting cancer and to everyone who is determined to fight for life.

Event organizers say Relay For Life is more than a fundraiser…it’s a life-changing experience; an opportunity to bring family and friends together to celebrate a shared commitment to fight back against this disease.

At 10 pm luminaries will light up the night. Each candle bears the name of a cancer survivor or someone who has lost their battle with cancer.

Throughout the night participants are treated to all kinds of musical acts and activities including a silent auction and penny sale all while circling the track.

At 7am folks embrace the morning with the final lap.

Folks are reminded to leave their pets at home as this is an animal free event.
