Gearing up for the weekend of speed

Once you’ve seen the King of the Hill Dragway, you will always want go back, says Bruce Etches of North Bay Motor Sports.

Once you’ve seen the King of the Hill Dragway, you will always want go back, says Bruce Etches of North Bay Motor Sports.

Last years event had 375 cars competing, in front of an audience of 7500 people, for a prize payout of $28,000 spilt between six classes of racing. Etches says the fourth annual event, this coming weekend, will be no different.

“We have racers coming from all over Ontario, Quebec, and the northern United States,” Etches said.

The three days of drag racing, held at North Bay’s airport, is an event put on by the Rotary Club of Nipissing and North Bay Motor Sports. Aside from creating a haven for car enthusiasts, the event has also raised $50,000 towards building the new North Bay General Hospital.

This year’s event will also include two jet cars, named Beast from the East and Blast from the Past, acting as the feature attraction.

“They’ll be doing some heads up racing on Saturday and Sunday, they’re always a crowd pleaser,” Etches said.

“When the jet cars come out, with the flames behind them, everyone is excited.”

Etches added the event isn’t just for those with a need to see speed.

“There’s something for everyone to do, the kids can go in the bouncy land and play, or you can see the city from a helicopter ride,” he explained.

“Or just sit down and watch some drag racing, you can do that too.”

The event also includes a classic car show provided by the North Bay Cruisers. Etches boasts the classic car show will be one of the main attractions at the dragway, with over 130 cars on display.

“Some of these cars are just phenomenal, these things are just unbelievable” he said.

“They’ll bring back memories from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.”

Tickets for the event range from $10 to $20 per day, or $30 for a weekend pass.

Weekend passes are available at The Steering Wheel, or Brownlee Automotive.
