There were four new fires reported in the Northeast Region on Wednesday, May 11. Fires occurred in the Cochrane (1), North Bay (1), Sudbury (1) and Timmins (1) districts. Â Cochrane 2 was reported north of Fraserdale and is being held at 10.0 hectares. North Bay 7, in French River Provincial Park, is out at 0.3 hectares. Sudbury 8, near Tilton Lake, was called out at 0.4 hectares. Timmins 6, east of Timmins, is out at 0.1 hectares.

Two new fires have so far been reported today. Chapleau 2, north of Missonga, is under control at 1.0 hectare. Wawa 1, south of Black Trout Lake, is under control at 0.1 hectares.

The fire hazard in the Northeast Region is moderate to high and resident burning is the main area of concern for fire suppression specialists. When cleaning up wood and grass debris, the ministry suggests composting, chipping or taking debris to a landfill site instead of burning. If you still decide to burn debris, residents are reminded that they are required to follow safe outdoor fire guidelines. In particular, there are restrictions on day burning of brush and grass. Fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset, be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise, attended at all times and put dead out before leaving.

The hazard will be temporarily reduced Friday and Saturday as thunderstorms pass through the region. The hazard is expected to rebound on Sunday.

If you live within a municipality, contact your local municipal office or fire department BEFORE burning.
