The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) is continuing a Flood Warning for the Lake Nipissing shoreline in the City of North Bay, the Municipality of Callander, and the Parks Creek subwatershed.

A significant multi-day rain event is in the forecast, poised to begin on Saturday, April 27. Landscape conditions with dormant vegetation and saturated soils have limited capacity to store additional moisture. Water level and flow on local lakes and rivers will increase in response to the forecasted rain.

A Flood Watch has been issued for the La Vase River downstream of Lakeshore Drive and Wasi River subwatershed.

A Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook continues for the other areas of the North Bay-Mattawa watershed (see Flood Condition terminology below).

“Water levels on Lake Nipissing are above the maximum non-damage threshold,” states Angela Mills, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer. “Shoreline areas are vulnerable to strong westerly winds that amplify local water level and wave action."

“The Flood Warning issued last week remains in effect and NBMCA continues to operate the Parks Creek Backflood Control structure, located at Eva Wardlaw Conservation Area in North Bay,” says Chitra Gowda, NBMCA Flood Warning Coordinator. “Four extra pumps are being placed at the dam to help increase capacity and be prepared the best we can for the upcoming storm that starts this Saturday. Depending on the weather conditions, water levels in Lake Nipissing and Parks Creek may increase.”

The City of North Bay has two sandbag filling stations at Sunset Park, at the end of Sunset Boulevard, and at Champlain Park, located at the end of Premier Road. If you have a flood emergency, please contact your municipality. If you live in an unincorporated township, please contact the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – North Bay District.

The public is encouraged to keep children and pets away from watercourses and shorelines. Area residents and visitors, especially those in low-lying areas, are encouraged to monitor the conditions as they develop and take proper precautions during times of high flow.

As part of the NBMCA Flood Forecasting and Warning Program, staff will continue to monitor weather and watershed conditions and update this message if needed based on the changing weather/streamflow conditions. Staff remain in contact with municipalities and other partners as required.

This message will be in effect until Wednesday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m.
