The sixty-five member 22 Wing Concert Band, composed of volunteer musicians from North Bay and the surrounding area, hosted a musical concert celebrating 100 years of powered flight in Canada, on Saturday, November 28th at North Bay’s Capitol Centre.

Accompanied by six members of the 8 Wing/ CFB Trenton Band, eight members of the Air Command Pipes and Drums and eight members of the Governor General’s Foot Guards from Ottawa, the band put on a visual and musical performance that took the audience on a journey through a history of aviation beginning in 1909.

In addition to recognizing a century of Canadian aviation accomplishments, the concert raised $2,620 for the Military Police Fund for Blind Children, a charitable organization that support visibly impaired children throughout Canada.

Colonel François Malo, Wing Commander for 22 Wing/CFB North Bay, welcomed a packed house and thanked the community of North Bay for showing its support to the 22 Wing Concert Band. “This fantastic evening gives us an opportunity to connect with Canadians, to convey how very proud we are of our history of aviation in Canada, to showcase our wonderful band and to raise funds for a great cause.”

In addition to the musical performances, aviation memorabilia and artwork were displayed for the evening in the W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery. The concert was the final event hosted by 22 Wing to commemorate this year’s Centennial of Flight. Last year’s concert paid tribute to NORAD’s 50th anniversary, and next year’s will commemorate the Canadian Navy’s 100th anniversary.
