Three Toronto area men, whose fireworks triggered a forest fire, have been fined a total of $300 and ordered to reimburse the Ministry of Natural Resources $2,700 in fire fighting costs.

Ivica Druzic, 28, Steve Pozo, 27, and Marko Visic, 26, were each fined $100 and ordered to reimburse the ministry $900. They were convicted of not properly extinguishing fireworks that they set off in a wooded area north of Restoule, resulting in the 2005 Victoria Day blaze.

The fire was put out by two FireRanger crews with the backing of a water bomber. The fire destroyed several pieces of ministry equipment including two bags of hose, two backpack pumps and camping equipment, as well as the personal belongings of one of the crews.

Justice of the Peace Mike Kitler heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, North Bay on June 13, 2006.

The ministry reminds the public that it is unwise to light fireworks in a wooded area and that it is also their responsibility to ensure that all hot embers be properly put out before leaving the area.
